Local unit PTAs like Brookside work within their own schools to enrich the educational experience for students, support families, and build community. We raise monies for materials, after-school programs, field trips, assemblies and more, and organize hundreds of volunteers every year to help make Brookside the great school it is. In addition, we are connected to the Washington State PTA and the National PTA, both of which provide powerful lobbying efforts on behalf of all children. For more than 100 years, PTA has been at the forefront of issues affecting children, parents and public schools. PTA is credited with lobbying for establishing Kindergarten in public schools, hot lunch programs, juvenile justice and child-labor laws, school bus safety and TV ratings efforts, to name a few.

This year, we have the opportunity to sign up and become PTA members online! It's $13 per person for the 2020-2021 school year and must be renewed every year to remain active. Multiple family members can sign up including your kids' grandparents! And we have a high bar to reach as membership has increased this past year so let's keep up the momentum!

Open Board Positions for 2021-2022

PTA President:

The PTA President oversees all PTA meetings. They build an effective PTA team that can work to enrich educational experiences of our children. They meet with the principal as needed as a liaison between the PTA and our school. They oversee and encourage all Board and Chair members.

PTA Co President:

The PTA Co President works with the President to help carry the load. The Co President assists in the Presidential tasks. The Co President will take over the President role the following year.

The Secretary works with the President to prepare meeting agendas and distributes them to Board and General members. They record meeting minutes, direct and records motions. They keep attendance at all meetings and prepare sign-in sheets for monthly board meetings. They keep a notebook with copies of the budget, monthly minutes, agendas, board meeting attendance, the bylaws, and the standing rules. They assist the President, when needed. Our wonderful secretary, Cory, stayed on the Board an extra year after her kids moved on to Kellogg. She is ready to continue her service with her kids at their school.

Ways and Means:

The Ways and Means role assists the PTA Board in raising money needed to meet the proposed PTA budget. They form and chair committee leads for the annual fundraisers. They oversee the main fundraising events and work directly with fundraiser lead chairs. They review previous years’ successes and growth opportunities.

Staff Support:

The Staff Support member facilitates ways to support and appreciate our teachers and staff. They oversee the annual awards for teacher, staff and a parent at Brookside. They oversee staff appreciation week in May. They coordinate other staff appreciation activities such as staff lunches throughout the year.

FACE/DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion):

This role works directly with the families at Brookside. You will work with Brookside’s Family Advocate and with others members across our school district to help Brookside families feel welcomed and a part of our school. This year we have been working with Susie Moore to start the Community Conversations on Race and to reach out to families to help meet their needs. The FACE/DEI member, in the past, has run our welcome back coffee time, the first day of school, for all families and for Kindergarten families. They oversee the classroom liaison role and reach out to families that are new or who want to be more connected and involved in our school. The FACE/DEI chair helps bridge equity gaps at Brookside.
