Brookside Math Olympiads Information

What is Math Olympiads?

The Brookside Math Olympiads program is an opportunity for 4th, 5th, and 6th graders to practice and improve their math skills.  This program, open free of charge, consists of three parts:

  • Students meet to practice math skills one day a week for an hour from October to mid-March.
  • Each month from November through March students take a 30 minute Math Olympiads test at Brookside.
  • Students participate in the Shoreline Math Olympiads held in March.

Who Can Participate?

Brookside 4th, 5th, and 6th graders who like math and want to improve their skills will enjoy this opportunity.  Instruction will be provided appropriate to the current skills of the students.  The goal is to help every student improve their skills as much as possible.  THE MORE PARENT INVOLVEMENT WE GET, THE MORE REALISTIC THIS GOAL BECOMES!

Parent Volunteers

The success of the Math O program is due to parent volunteers.  We ask for instructional assistants as well as other help.  Instructional assistants help out during the class.  Your coach will give you the answers to the problems ahead of time so you will feel more confident with helping.  You do not have to be a math wiz to be a parent volunteer.  If you can help only once a month that is fine if you can help every Friday that is great too!

When will the Math Olympiads Team Meet?

We will start in mid-October on Friday mornings from 8:00-9:00am.  Please refer to the registration form that comes home in September for room locations.

Will my child be able to purchase one of those great “got math?” t-shirt?

Yes!  All Math Olympiads students, parent volunteers, and coaches are encouraged to purchase a “got math?” t-shirt.  These t-shirts have the same design as last year so there’s no need to purchase a new t-shirt unless your child would like a larger size!  Purchasing information is on the registration form.

What about a student who is on Patrol?

Students who serve on patrol can also participate.  If they have patrol duty that day then their coach will dismiss them on time so they can report for patrol duty.

Who Leads the Brookside Math Olympiads Team?

Carol Coleman is the Math Olympiads Team Coordinator and is the primary point of contact.  Instruction, test proctoring, test grading, and logistical support are provided by parent volunteers.
Contact Carol at  ec.coleman@comcast.net if you have any questions.
